Preah Sihanouk residents gather in defense of disputed land
Nearly 100 residents from Samrong commune’s O’Trachak Chit village in Preah Sihanouk province’s Prey Nup district gathered yesterday in front of the provincial hall to ask authorities to expedite the resolution of their year-long land dispute with the provincial Forestry Administration, according to community representatives. Sixty-eight families in O’Trachak Chit village say that since 2001, they have been living legally on land that the state now claims it owns, despite not having official land titles for their plots. Villagers are afraid of facing eviction after bulldozers from the provincial Forestry Administration cleared an area around the community to construct a road to a nearby forest, community representative Sam Sophat said. …
